Chapter 4 - Derby Diaries

Derby, you’ve left a mark.

As part of my journey, Boomerang Consultancy proudly partnered with Marnin Bowa Dumbara Healing Family Centre (MBDHFC) to strengthen workforce capability and embed culturally grounded, trauma-informed practice. MBDHFC isn’t just a partner—they’re one of the key sponsors who helped get Boomerang on the Road moving in the first place.

Ten days in Derby. Eight of those on the ground—deep in the work. Training, mentoring, supporting frontline workers who show up every day for their communities.

A big focus was strengthening practice around the Safe and Together Model—bringing it to life through a Perpetrator Mapping Tool workshop. Together, we unpacked patterns of coercive control, sharpened skills in documenting perpetrator behaviour, and explored practical ways to embed these tools into everyday practice.

I also delivered a one-day overview of the Safe and Together Model—and the feedback said it all: real tools, real impact, ready to use immediately.

But Derby wasn’t just about training.

It was about connection.

I had the privilege of meeting incredible people and recording three powerful community stories—voices that deserve to be heard, shared, and honoured.

Through the Boomerang Stamp It Out sponsorship, we’re already seeing real impact in Derby:
✨ Stronger workforce capability
✨ Practical tools in action for responding to FDSV
✨ A growing shift toward perpetrator accountability
✨ Culturally safe, trauma-informed practice taking deeper root

And then there are the moments you don’t plan…

Like sitting with Katelyn—aka the Derby Jetty Queen. Respected by everyone, passionate about fishing, and someone who quietly grounds you just by being present. That time on the jetty? It reminded me why this journey matters.

One month on the road since leaving Rockingham, and here’s what it looks like:
🚗 2000+ km travelled
🕒 30 hours behind the wheel
🗣️ 2 yarning circles
📖 13 stories captured
🎥 2 videos
✍🏽 4 blogs (including this one)
📚 Safe and Together training + implementation
…and yes… one stingray encounter

Feeling grateful. Feeling inspired. And ready for whatever comes next.
